WIPO Copyright Committee meeting – 10-12/03/08

The World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights met in Geneva on March 10^th-12^th, 2008. Similarly to previous meetings, the Committee was divided on its proposals and was not able to find consensus. The main topic of the meeting was the proposal to improve exceptions and limitations to copyright.

Reding on spectrum management at ERG and RSPG joint dinner – 27/02/08

On February 27th, 2008, Mrs. Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media, gave a keynote speech entitled: “The Wireless Growth Potential: the Economic Case for an Ambitious Reform of Spectrum Management” at the joint dinner of the European Regulators Group (ERG) and the Radio Spectrum Policy Group (RSPG) in Gothenburg.

Extension of term of protection for performers' rights - 14/02/2008

The intention to extend the term of protection for performers' rights was announced on February 14th, 2008, by the European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, Charlie McCreevy.

EC Communication on media literacy published – 20/12/07

The European Commission (EC) adopted a Communication on a European approach to media literacy in the digital environment on December 20th, 2007. The Communication plays an integral role in the EC’s aim to enhance citizens’ trust in, and take-up of, content online. Mrs. Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media, sees media literacy as essential for active media and democracy. The new information and communication technologies require all to develop new skills, as traditional literacy is no longer enough.
