EC published a Communication setting EU priorities for WRC-07 – 04/07/07 Print E-mail

On July 2nd, 2007, the European Commission (EC) published a Communication on the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference 2007 (WRC-07), in order to set EU priorities for the latter.

The Communication highlights EC’s objectives concerning spectrum management: market-based approach is privileged and need for additional spectrum for “Future Mobile Communications” (see point 4 of the Communication).

Main bands’ allocations described in this Communication, with interest for broadcasters, are the followings:

- HF (possible uses for Digital radio broadcasting – e.g., DRM –, military, maritime and aeronautical applications)
- UHF (possible upgrade in the mobile services’ status and more flexibility in the allocation of services)
- C-Band (possible allocation for mobile services)

WRC-07 will also set priorities for the next WRC. EC wants to stress the need to increase market-based approach for spectrum management for WRC-11.

Next steps:

- The European Parliament and the European Council are called to endorse the objectives set in this Communication before WRC-07
- WRC-07 will be held between October 22nd and November 16th, 2007 in Geneva.
