A public consultation on the regulatory environment for Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment was opened on July 31st. The consultation’s aim is to review the operation of the Directive on radio equipment and telecommunication terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity (1999/5/EC, R&TTED); which will result in a second R&TTE progress Report.
The R&TTE Directive defines “new rules for the placing on the market and putting into service of Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment”. As stipulated in article 17 the R&TTE Directive’s operability shall be reviewed every third year. The European Commission (EC) has underlined the importance of the review in collaboration with other legislation, such as the Radio Spectrum policy and the Telecom Package. The Telecom Package is currently under review and amendments are planned to be carried out by the end of 2007. The use of new radio equipments when put into service might interfere with already allocated radio spectrum. To avoid interference of radio frequencies it is utterly important that R&TTE legislation considers different aspects in accordance with the Radio Spectrum policy and the Telecom Package. The consultation will close on September 30th, 2007, and is open for companies, organisations and professionals. It will be “analysed by all the Commission’s services in charge of the abovementioned legislation, while the ensuing second R&TTE Report will focus on R&TTE application.”
