AVMS Directive approved without amendments – 29/11/07 Print E-mail
The European Parliament (EP) formally approved, without amendments, the Council’s common position on the new Audiovisual Media Services without frontiers Directive (AVMS) today, November 29th, 2007, at its plenary session in Brussels. This followed from the political agreement the EP and the Council reached in May 2007.

The new AVMS Directive modernises the rules for Europe’s audiovisual media industry, enabling the sector to better face the future technological and market developments. The Directive now provides a comprehensive legal framework for all audiovisual media services, more flexible and future-oriented advertising rules and new rights for citizens. Furthermore, the Directive protects the key European values. The new rules are to be implemented into national law by the end of 2009. However, Ms. Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media, has asked Member States (MS) to transpose the Directive in a “light touch” manner, instead of adding any strict national provisions, in order for the sector to be able to benefit from the freedom the new Directive provides.

Note:
- Radio excluded from scope
- Directive translated and published in the Official Journal in December 2007
