On June 2nd, 2008, the European Commission (EC) launched a public consultation on the revision of the “Directive 1999/94/EC relating to the availability of consumer information on fuel economy and CO2 emissions in respect of the marketing of new passenger cars” (car labelling directive). This consultation is opened to the general public and to stakeholders who will be able to submit their answers until July 28th, 2008 by filling in an online questionnaire. The aim of this consultation is to get feedback on people’s awareness of the car labelling directive and on how the information provided about CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in car advertisements can be made clearer. The car labelling directive (adopted in 1999) aimed at enabling consumers to make informed choices when buying cars. The current information that should be made available to consumers is as follows:
