EC launches a public consultation on the revision of the car labelling directive - 02/06/08 Print E-mail
On June 2nd, 2008, the European Commission (EC) launched a public consultation on the revision of the “Directive 1999/94/EC relating to the availability of consumer information on fuel economy and CO2 emissions in respect of the marketing of new passenger cars” (car labelling directive).

This consultation is opened to the general public and to stakeholders who will be able to submit their answers until July 28th, 2008 by filling in an online questionnaire. The aim of this consultation is to get feedback on people’s awareness of the car labelling directive and on how the information provided about CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in car advertisements can be made clearer.

The car labelling directive (adopted in 1999) aimed at enabling consumers to make informed choices when buying cars. The current information that should be made available to consumers is as follows:

  • A label on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions displayed on all new cars in the showrooms;
  • National guides on the fuel efficiency of all new cars must be available at the point of sale;
  • Posters must be displayed at dealerships showing data on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of all car models for sale;
  • Inclusion of information on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in printed promotional literature such as technical manuals, brochures, advertisements in newspapers, magazines and trade press, and posters.

Next steps: Deadline to answer the public consultation: July 28th, 2008
