| EC launches new consultation on Broadcasting Communication – 08/04/2009 |

On April 8th, 2009, the European Commission (EC) published a new draft Communication on the application of state aid rules to public service broadcasting (Broadcasting Communication). This triggers a new public consultation: Member States and stakeholders have the opportunity to submit their views on the proposed text by May 8th, 2009, at the latest. On the basis of the comments received, the EC intends to adopt a modernised Broadcasting Communication later this year.
To access the public consultation, please click here A first public consultation on the general principles of a possible review took place between January and March 2008. The EC subsequently held a second public consultation between November 2008 and January 2009 on a first draft for the new Broadcasting Communication. Main changes as announced by the EC compared to the previous draft are: - clarifications on the principles of technology neutrality and editorial independence; - more clarity on holding public service reserves; - more flexibility left to Member States for fitting their specific broadcasting system into the common framework.
