On May 14th, 2009, Siim Kallas, Commissioner for administrative affairs, audit and anti-fraud announced in a press release that it was “time to review the Register for Interest Representatives”. On June 23rd, 2009, this voluntary register will have completed a full year of operations, with already 1450 entities registered.
This register is part of the European Transparency Initiative (ETI). In 2005, the European Commission (EC) launched the European Transparency Initiative (ETI) in order to increase openness and public trust in the EU institutions. Lobbying transparency is one of the main components of this initiative.
The EC has begun reviewing this register. Commissioner Kallas declared "I'm grateful for all the rich and constructive comments we have already received since the Register launch. As we assess and prepare for the next phase, I invite all stakeholders to send us any further comments and concrete suggestions they consider useful for the preparation of our review – best before mid June."
This register is not the only one available for citizens. The European Parliament also publishes a list of accredited lobbyists and organisations wishing to access the Parliament regularly. AER is part of both registers.
