The VPRT was founded in 1990 after the merger of two associations with parallel objectives: the BPRT(Federal Association of Private Broadcasters and Telecommunication) and the BKS (Association ofCable and Satellite). The VPRT's main aim is to foster private broadcasting with a strong focus on media policy and to liberalise trade and industry markets. Currently, approximately 160 companies in the area of private TV and radio (35% of total private broadcasters), multimedia and the telecommunication industry are represented in the VPRT. The VPRT is a registered non-economic association. It has six main bodies:
The VPRT represents the interests of its members on a national and international level in negotiations with legislative and executive institutions, with copyright owners in order to complete global contracts for the members of the association and by participating actively in national and international committees. It further advises its members on technical, legal, economic and media policy issues. VPRT headquarters are in Berlin with currently 13 staff members. VPRT is a founding member of AER.
