It was good news all round as the latest industry figures, published by Rajar (Radio Joint Audience Research Limited), show more than 45m Brits are tuning in to the radio each week. The number, which is the highest since official records began in 1992, is believed to have come as a result of radio stations being more readily accessible through a number of mediums, including digital TV, podcasting, mobile phones and the internet. An estimated 7.8% of people aged 15 and above listen to the radio via their mobiles, according to Rajar's latest quarterly figures. Virgin Radio Media Director, James Cridland, believes that this rapid growth is "Probably driven by the fact that more mobile phones than ever have inbuilt FM radios (and are now being sold with FM as a feature)." Listening via the internet and via digital television is also growing in popularity, increasing by 10% and 9% respectively. Internet podcasting is also on the up. There are now 2.1 million people who download and listen to podcasts - a rise of 15% on the previous three months. But the established radio stations are benefiting digital radio listening, which appears to have reached a plateau, according to the figures, with leading stations failing to make significant gains. The figures will come as good news for many in the radio industry, as they demonstrate that radio is still playing an important part in many people's lives.
