The Association of Finnish Broadcasters was founded in 1983.

Commercial radio was introduced in Finland in 1985 when the first local radio stationsstarted. In March 2004, AFB hosts a total of 83 radio stations: local, semi-national and national radio stations. The current operating licenses are valid until the end of year 2006. Commercial radio stations in Finland reach weekly about 3.5 million listeners. The public broadcaster's reach is about 2.9 million weekly. Radio advertising market share of display advertising in Finland was 4.4 per cent in 2003.

Srl Ry joined AER on July 1st 2001.
